Meru Hospice is a charitable trust fund that is committed to reduce the suffering of individuals with incurable diseases especially cancer in Meru county and its environs.Because cancer is causing suffering to hundreds of people and families; Meru Hospice exists to improve the quality of life of these individuals and their families while at the same time creating awareness within the community about cancer prevention, the need for cancer screening and the opportunity to get care, especially at home.
Majority of the community members have little information concerning cancer prevention, early diagnosis, care and management. For this reason they do not take precautions to prevent cancer or do voluntary cancer screening for early detection. Myths have also been a stumbling block towards seeking medical care.
Meru is experiencing a rapid increase in Cancer cases. Most people seeking medical care are diagnosed at advanced stages thus little or no cure can be achieved. The patients are therefore in dire need of palliative care services. The Hospice currently has over 400 persons with advanced cancer under its care.
As the need of palliative care increases, donor funding which has been the major source of financing is declining due to the global financial crisis. This has presented challenges in the continuation of palliative care in a holistic manner to cater for the rapidly increasing number of patients.
Meru Hospice is a non‐profit making organization that depends on local and foreign supporters to raise the much‐needed resources to provide quality care. Patient numbers are rising making it absolutely necessary to raise funds to meet this rising demand for these essential service.
Meru County takes lead in the number of cancer cases in the country. Cancers of the GIT (gastrointestinal track also known as the digestive system) system are most common followed by breast, then cervical cancer and in fourth place is prostate cancer. The hospice currently has about 500 cancer patients receiving palliative care. Children, while not as many, are also beneficiaries of care.
